Subscribing to a podcast means that the podcast will automatically download to your computer, and then if you wish, download automatically to your mp3 player. Since the iPod is the most common mp3 player, I'll give instructions for setting that up. If you have another brand, you may need to consult your owner's manual.
1. The first step is to download iPodder. iPodder is free software, and is called an aggregator. It's purpose is to allow you to subscribe to podcasts, to determine when a new podcast you have subscribed to is available, to download the podcast to your computer, and if appropriate, download it to your mp3 player when it is hooked up to your computer. It will also provide a directory of podcasts where you can look for other podcasts of interest. Note: Mac users should download iPodderX -- same functionality, but for Macs.
2. If you do not already have it, I recommend that you download iTunes. As iPodder downloads the podcast, it will automatically start iTunes and add it to your library. The podcast is then available for you to listen to whenever you want on your computer without being online. And for those of us with iPods, iTunes will automatically transfer the podcast to the iPod the next time we connect the iPod to the computer. Then you can listen whenever wherever you want.
3. Once you have installed the software, start iPodder. Click on the subscriptions tab, then click on the green circle with a "+" in the center. This will open up a window for the feed URL. Then copy and paste this URL into the subscription window in iPodder: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Retire2ServePodcast.
That's it. Happy listening!
